The purpose of this blog is to describe the difference between traditional cotton wick candles and luxury wooden wick candles and the benefits of purchasing a luxury wooden wick candle. Not all candles are created equal. You may not realize that traditional candles you purchase at large corporate stores are made with cotton wicks. Traditional cotton wick candles take only a few seconds to light the wick. On the other hand, wooden wick candles can take up to 20 seconds to light. It can take several tries to light a candle with a wooden wick because it takes longer for the flame to penetrate the material. They cannot be lit with a match. This is the greatest difference between the two types of candles that you will want to keep in mind. Use a lighter to light your wooden wick candle. We recommend you purchase a stick lighter as it will save your fingers and works the best when lighting wooden wick candles. It is recommended that you use your luxury candle indoors, rather than outdoors where they are vulnerable to wind gusts that may blow them out. One delightful thing about candles with wooden wicks is they give off a more indulging scent than cotton wick candles. Maintenance
When you light a candle with a wooden wick, it is extremely important to make sure it burns long enough for a layer of wax to melt all the way to the edges of the vessel. This can sometimes take between 3 to 4 hours on the first light. That is completely normal for a wooden wick candle and highly recommended the first time you light this type of candle. This will ensure that in the future when you light your candle, it will burn evenly, ensuring that you will not create a “tunnel” through the center of your wax and will provide you the most enjoyable experience. When burning wooden wick candles, you want it to burn as evenly as possible. If by chance your candle does extinguish itself, scrape away any un-melted wax to avoid the tunnel effect. For optimal use with your new wooden wick candle, you will want to keep the wick at the recommended 1/8” – 3/16” inch length. Cotton wick candles can be kept at ¼ length, but wooden wick candles are different. Cotton wick candles will often create a mushroom look if not trimmed properly and will fall into the wax. Wooden wick candles must be trimmed between each new burn to decrease the flame size and prevent any soot from falling into the wax. Trimming your wick may make it more difficult to light because there is less material to catch fire, however, it is better to do this for the overall lifespan of the candle. To trim your wooden-wick candle you will first pinch the upper-most part of the wick with your index finger and thumb where it appears to be splitting and discard. You can also purchase a wooden wick trimmer to do the job for you. It is best to burn wooden wick candles for 1-2 hours at a time after you have already done the 3-4 hour first burn.
